BONFIRE NIGHT

On the 5th of November people in England celebrate Bonfire Night.

There are small fireworks parties in back gardens along with big fireworks in public parks.

The reason they celebrate is because it's the anniversary of an attempt to blow up the Houses of Parliament by a protestant man called Guy Fawkes.

Guy Fawkes and some other men put 36 barrels of gunpowder under the Houses of Parliament in London, ready to set off a massive explosion. They wanted to kill the Catholic king James I.

One member of the group sent a letter to his friend who worked in Parliament, warning him to stay away on November 5th.

The King found the letter. The Houses of Parliament were saved!
