 THANKSGIVING DAY

A ship, called “Mayflower”, took off at September 6th 1620, with 102 people (the pilgrim) and 30 crew members on board to the new world of America, later called “New England”.

The pilgrim had been traveling for 65 days until they reached the new world on November 11th in 1620.

While the men were building houses for the small village of Plimoth, the women and children had to stay on board of the Mayflower for another 2 months. In this winter more than 50 people died because of illness and coldness.

In January 1621, the pilgrim had the first contact to the “Wampanoag”, a tribe of Native Americans. They taught the pilgrim how to hunt and how to plant or grow up corn and other plants.

In autumn 1621, when the pilgrim had enough food, they wanted to thank the Wampanoag for their help and celebrated the first American Thanksgiving, the “Harvest Feast”. They celebrated it for almost 3 days and nights.

Nowadays, this festivity is celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November every year and this year it is on 26th.

In USA there is no school on Thanksgiving Day and there is no school on Friday. Families get together on Thanksgiving Day and invite their friends. They have a big dinner. They eat roast turkey, sweet potatoes (called yam), gravy, corn, pumpkin pie and cranberry sauce. Before dinner, they give thanks God for the things they have.

Happy Thanksgiving to all of you!

BONFIRE NIGHT

On the 5th of November people in England celebrate Bonfire Night.

There are small fireworks parties in back gardens along with big fireworks in public parks.

The reason they celebrate is because it's the anniversary of an attempt to blow up the Houses of Parliament by a protestant man called Guy Fawkes.

Guy Fawkes and some other men put 36 barrels of gunpowder under the Houses of Parliament in London, ready to set off a massive explosion. They wanted to kill the Catholic king James I.

One member of the group sent a letter to his friend who worked in Parliament, warning him to stay away on November 5th.

The King found the letter. The Houses of Parliament were saved!

If you want to know more about this day, you can watch the following power point presentation and videos:

Tips to Learn Irregular Verbs in English

Regular verbs have an established pattern through all their tenses. Usually, the only thing you have to do to form one is add -ed  at the end of the word and that’s it. For example:                      Play - played   /      study-  studied

Irregular verbs, on the other hand, Don’t follow a pattern at all. You can recognize them because they look so different in the past tense. Some examples:

Write - wrote - written  /  Go - went - gone

Here you have an irregular verb list of the most commonly used verbs.

Top tips to learn irregular verbs

Group them together!

Irregular verbs don’t follow any rules, and that makes them really hard to remember. Some of them, though, have a similar pattern. Instead of learning them in alphabetical order, put them in similar groups. How you do it depends on you, but here are some ideas:

- They stay the same in each form (split, upset, up, shut, cut).

- They stay the same in past tense and past participle (keep, shoot, bring, buy, build).

- They change in each form (be, break, flow, begin)

Here you can download a list of irregular verbs in groups:

https://yourclassathome.files.wordpress.com/2014/10/irregularverbsingroups1.pdf

Memorize the most common irregular verbs first

Instead of going through a list of irregular verbs, focus on the most commonly used words first.

  • Find, found, found
  • Go, went, gone
  • Fell, felt, felt
  • Come, came, come
  • Know, knew, known
  • Say, said, said
  • Get, got, gotten
  • Give, gave, given
  • Become, became, become
  • See, saw, seen

Learn in sentences

It is easier to remember the words when they’re part of a sentence of a phrase. Learn words by putting them into sentences. This way, you will also learn how to use them correctly.

To learn the word see, for example, you can use sentences like this: “I see the bee, I saw the snow, but I’ve never seen a bee in the snow!”

Be creative—the weirder the sentences are, the easier they will be to remember.

Use the internet

Here’s a list of some online resources:

Get familiar with them

The more you expose yourself to irregular verbs, the faster you will memorize them. So, read as much as you can, watch more television in English and listen to podcasts or songs.

Use your dictionary

If you’re not sure whether a verb is irregular or not, look it up in the dictionary. A dictionary entry will provide the past tense and past participle of the word so you can decide if it’s irregular or regular.

Apply all of these tips, and you will learn irregular verbs easly!

EASTER HOLLIDAYS

Now that you have more free time, you have a great chance to learn English barely realising it! I’ll tell you how…

1.    Watching films:

One of the best ways to learn English is watching films…

Reasons:

VOCABULARY: You’re learning new words.  In films, words are used as part of a story and this context helps you to learn and remember new words more effectively.
PRONUNCIATION: Nothing is better than listening to real native English in a natural way.  Hearing native speakers in films will teach better pronunciation.
CULTURE: You can learn about the culture behind the language when you watch movies in English. Language and culture are closely connected.

Tips to learn English through movies:

1.       Only choose interesting films. Watch films you will enjoy or even films you have already watched.
2.       Avoid difficult films. Try to choose a movie that suits your current level of English. If you are a beginner, you may want to start with simple cartoons or children’s films, like Toy Story.
3.       Don’t pretend to understand every single word, you should try to understand the general meaning.
4.       Repeat your favorite lines!
5.       Use subtitles. It is a good idea to turn the subtitles on, better in English than in  your own language.

Some films you may like and be suitable for you:

1.  Toy Story (1995, 1999, 2010 y 2019). Easy to follow, both the story and vocabulary. For children and adults. Here you have a clip of one of these films to examplify how to learn with films.

2.  Forrest Gump (1994). Simple and clear language. The main character speaks slowly, perfect to follow his English while learning the recent American History.

3.  Love Actually (2003). A romantic comedy about the lives of eight very different couples in dealing with their love lives in interrelated tales all set before Christmas in London.

4.  Notting Hill (1999). Another romantic comedy about a modest bookstore owner who meets one of the most famous movie stars in the world. It is the best choice to listen to the different American and British accents of the two main characters.

 B. LISTENING SONGS (you can find more songs in the label “exercises online” or in “Blogs”)

To practice simple present and continuous:

"Treat You Better" by Shawn Mendes

I won't lie to you
I
know he's just not right for you
And you
can tell me if I'm off
But I
see it on your face
When you
say that he's the one that you want
And you
're spending all your time
In this wrong situation
And anytime you
want it to stop
I know I can treat you better
Than
he can
And any girl like you
deserves a gentleman
Tell me why
are we wasting time
On all your wasted cryin'

When you should be with me instead
I
know I can treat you better
Better than
he can
I'll stop time for you
The second you say you
'd like me to
I just wanna
give you the loving that you're missing
Baby, just to
wake up with you
Would be everything I
need and this could be so different
Tell me what you
want to do
'Cause I know I can treat you better
Than he
can
And any girl like you…

-   To practice Past Simple

"Viva la vida" by Cold Play
One the hits of the British Band “Cold Play”, is a great choice to practice past simple tenses with irregular and irregular verbs (specially  /d/ y /t/ sounds), to practice their pronunciation. You can also revise the expression “used to + infinitivo” (solía).

used to rule the world
Seas would rise when I
gave the word
Now in the morning I sleep alone
Sweep the streets I
used to own
used to roll the dice
Feel the fear in my enemy’s eyes
Listened as the crowd would sing
Now the old king is dead long live the king
One minute I
held the key
Next the walls were closed on me
And I
discovered that my castles stand
Upon pillars of salt and pillars of sand
I hear Jerusalem bells a-ringing
Roman cavalry choirs are singing
Be my mirror, my sword and shield
My missionaries in a foreign field
For some reason I can’t explain
Once you’d gone
there was never
Never an honest word
And that
was when I ruled the world
It was a wicked and wild wind
Blew down the doors to let me in
Shattered windows and the sound of drums
People
couldn’t believe what I’d become
Revolutionaries wait
For my head on a silver plate
Just a puppet on a lonely string
Oh who would ever want to be king?
I hear Jerusalem bells a-ringing
Roman cavalry choirs are singing
Be my mirror, my sword and shield
My missionaries in a foreign field
For some reason I can’t explain
I know St Peter won’t call my name
Never an honest word
But that
was when I ruled the world
Oh oh oh oh ohh oh [x5]
I hear Jerusalem bells a-ringing
Roman cavalry choirs are singing
Be my mirror, my sword and shield
My missionaries in a foreign field
For some reason I can’t explain
I know St Peter won’t call my name
Never an honest word
But that
was when I ruled the world

- I hope you like it.... and remember...
